Skip-level meeting meaning
The name is literal. Reporting lines go: you, your manager, your manager's manager. A skip-level skips one rung. Your skip-level manager is that second person: your director, senior director, VP, or in a smaller company the founder or CTO.
Everyone knows it is happening. The manager being skipped is told in advance. That is what separates a skip-level from a back channel.
Who runs them, and with whom
- Director to IC: the most common shape, usually quarterly.
- VP to manager: quarterly or monthly, often the highest-stakes version.
- CTO or founder to anyone: in companies under about 200 people, this is simply how information travels.
What it is not
- Not a performance review. No rating comes out of it.
- Not an escalation channel. Bringing a complaint about your manager here almost always costs you more than it wins.
- Not a status meeting. Your skip already has the status. Repeating it wastes the one slot you get.
- Not optional-in-spirit. Declining reads badly even when the invite says "no pressure."
What your skip is actually looking for
Having sat on both sides of this for two decades, the honest list is short. They are testing whether you think one level above your title, whether you will name a risk before it becomes theirs, and whether the person in the room matches the person in your manager's write-up. Output is not on the list. They already have output.
How long, and how often
Thirty minutes is standard. Quarterly is a healthy cadence for ICs and managers; monthly for managers of managers or anyone mid-transition. Twice a year is the floor, because below that your skip has no first-hand memory of you when promotion calibration happens.
The one-sentence version
A skip-level meeting is the meeting where a senior leader decides, from direct evidence, how much scope you can be trusted with next.
